Welcome to Hitchin Online.

St Marys Church, HitchinWelcome to the beautiful market town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire. The town dates back well over a 1000 years and is home to the beautiful St Mary's Church. Hitchin built up around the River Hiz which still is part of the attraction of the town centre, the Hiz flows north and joins several other rivers before finding the North Sea at the Wash. The river itself, starts in Charlton just a mile from the town centre and is worth dropping by for a walk.

Hitchin is surrounded by many smaller towns and villages as well as the much larger Stevenage to the east and Luton to the west. Hitchin has a vibrant social scene which accounts for the large numbers of pubs, clubs and extremely good restaurants. During the summer, Hitchin is host to the Hitchin Festival which includes the Rhythyms of the World free concert which attracts over 20,000 visitors to our small town. Many of the acts at ROTW are from Hitchin or the surrounding towns which gives Hitchin a very active music scene.

ROTW 2007
Music and related Arts The weather held and another fantastic event went off without a hitch. Well I didn't notice if there was one!

The whole town was once again turned in to the most amazing sound stage with music to account for every taste as well as a multitude of stalls selling food from the four corners of the world.

Hitchin - Hertfordshire's First Fairtrade Town
Fairtrade You may have noticed that our web directory now includes the Fairtrade logo for companies that stock Fairtrade goods or primarily use Fairtrade goods in their day-to-day business. If you feel that your companies direcory listing should warrant a Fairtrade  logo, please inform us of your companies commitment to Fairtrade initiative.

In February 2006 Hitchin achieved the status of being a fairtrade town having met five goals set out by the Fairtrade Foundation. These are:
  • the local council to pass a resolution supporting fairtrade and agreeing to serve fairtrade beverages at its meetings and in its offices and canteens
  • a range of fairtrade products to be available for purchase in at least three local cafes and catering establishments and six retail outlets
  • fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places such as estate agents, hairdressers etc and community organisations such as churches, schools etc
  • media coverage and popular support for the campaign to be promoted
  • a localfair trade steering group be convened to ensure continued commitment to its fairtrade town status

    The Market from Space
Travel and Transport I had the pleasure of a day trip to Edinburgh last week. Up at the crack of dawn, off to Luton Airport for an early flight with EasyJET. Has anyone noticed it's cheaper to park your car at the airport than using a car park in Hitchin town centre but that's for another day.

We took off heading east and then to my delight we banked to the left and I got one of the best aerial views of Hitchin, most of them being strapped to chimneys or bolted to the sides of houses but I digress...
